The G Adventures app is underrated — worth downloading before your trip

General Discussion
On my 11th trip with G Adventures now and I still see people on day one who haven't downloaded the app. Worth a reminder since it is genuinely useful and most people overlook it. Once you book, your trip shows up in the app with the full itinerary. You can see who else is booked on your departure, how many people are currently signed up, and the number updates as new bookings come in. There is a chat feature that lets you connect with your group before you even leave home. The bit I find most useful is connecting with people who are arriving in the starting city early. If a few of you are there a day or two before the group meeting you can make plans, grab dinner, see a bit of the city together. Takes the edge off day one when you would otherwise be walking into a room full of strangers. Early on there were some reports of glitches but it has been solid for a while now. Works well in my experience. Just download it when you book. Most people wait until the last minute or forget entirely and miss the early group chat.

The itinerary section is genuinely useful, agree on that. There is a lot more detail in the app than on the website which I didn't expect. The chat is more hit and miss in my experience though. On one trip barely anyone used it before we left and on another the whole group was active from weeks out. I also have a friend who booked through a travel agent and the app showed nothing for her, no trip, no chat, nothing. So I think how useful it is depends a lot on how your group happens to engage with it and how you booked.

All fair points. The chat is definitely the inconsistent part. My main use for it has always been finding the one or two people arriving early in the starting city so we can make plans before day one. Even if only one person responds to a hello it is worth it. The itinerary depth is the other thing, you are right that most people don't realise how much more detail is in the app versus what is on the website. For the chat problem generally I do think the real gap is that there is no neutral place to connect with people going on the same departure before you book or early in the process. The G Adventures app only works once you are booked and only for GA trips obviously.

This is really interesting to read as someone looking at WeRoad rather than G Adventures. Is there anything equivalent for WeRoad? From what I can tell they do a WhatsApp group but only once the coordinator sets it up a couple of weeks before departure. Nothing before that where you can see who else is going or ask questions to people who have done the trip. I have actually been using Wannago for that, finding trip pages and seeing if anyone has posted about the departure I am looking at. Curious if G Adventures people use it too or if it is mainly a WeRoad community so far.
